Statement from Pearl Johnson on Hate Crimes Against Black Americans

Reno, NV — I am Pearl Johnson, a survivor of a hate crime that occurred in the State of Nevada in May2025. I speak today to raise awareness and call for action. The fight and the struggle against racially motivated violence in America is real. Hate crimes against Black people cause deep and lasting harm — to individuals, to families, and to entire communities. What my family and I experienced was terrifying, dehumanizing, and traumatic. The emotional and physical stress from being targeted because of my race has created serious health challenges and disrupted our sense of safety and wellbeing. No one should ever have to endure what my team and I endured. Now is the time for stronger protections, better reporting and support systems for victims, meaningful enforcement of existing laws, and community-based efforts to prevent hate and heal harm. Law enforcement, elected officials, community organizations, and everyday citizens must work together to ensure accountability, provide resources for survivors, and build safe, inclusive communities where everyone can live without fear. To survivors of hate: you are not alone. Seek support from trusted family, medical professionals, mental health providers, and victim advocacy groups. To community leaders and policymakers: we must listen, act, and invest in prevention, victim services, and education that confronts racism and hate at its roots.
