The Reno community is mourning the loss of an 83-year-old woman who has died after suffering injuries connected to the devastating Hawk Fire.

Hayde Medina-Valiente was taken to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for specialized treatment after being seriously injured during the fire, which began Saturday, August 22.

According to information provided by a member of the family, Medina-Valiente was among three relatives who suffered severe injuries in the fire and were transported by air to UC Davis, the nearest major burn center serving the Reno area.

Sadly, officials in Sacramento County confirmed Thursday that Medina-Valiente did not survive her injuries.

The two other members of her family who were injured reportedly remain hospitalized.

The Hawk Fire has taken a tremendous toll on the community. Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Chief Richard Edwards previously reported that four civilians and three firefighters were injured during the emergency.

The Nevada Justice Coalition and Faces of Success Radio extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Hayde Medina-Valiente. We also send our thoughts and prayers to the two family members who remain hospitalized and to everyone whose lives have been affected by this devastating fire.

We recognize the firefighters, emergency medical personnel, law enforcement officers, medical teams, volunteers and community members who have worked throughout this crisis to protect lives and assist those impacted.

As our community begins to understand the full human cost of the Hawk Fire, we encourage everyone to continue supporting the families who have lost homes, belongings, loved ones and their sense of security.
